Unpacking the Past : From Stuff to Wanderlust

Welcome to RV There Yet Tuesday, where I discuss everything, RV and Full Time RV life related, whether it's some DIY, our beginnings of the journey or just random tidbits on this wild ride. This category is everything RV related. I hope I've helped you join the fold of the RV life, or have inspired you to chase your dreams. Please read on, and leave comments below if you have some additional experiences to share, we'd love to hear them...

Living life was more than just staring at the walls and getting random phone calls from time to time on our adult children's lives. Little did we know we were surrounded by STUFF, and suffocated by it! I have unpacked the past and now give you the down low from stuff to wanderlust.

Because of Covid Maria and I spent the summer of 2020 like everyone else, alone, and sequestered from the world. The difference was, we lived in our "retirement" home that we had renovated for the past fourteen years, an old one room school house we called Dark Nest. This was a place we moved into in 2016 with our two youngest. Yes, their rooms were smaller than they were used to, and all four of us had to adapt to life in this place where we had spent years, and years of camping, and family time on the property. We made due with the small space, and then, years later, the two younglings took the leap, one after another, one heading to college, and one diving into the world searching for identity. You have to remember, we condensed down from a eighteen hundred square foot home, where we raised our family, and moved into a seven hundred and fifty square foot home, little did we know that had been the true beginning of condensing our life. We got rid of a lot, but there were totes, totes, and more totes full of material things unseen for years in the background.

We sat through the isolated summer and planned yet another winter trip to Florida. We discussed how shitty it was staring at the walls, and how confined we felt. Yes, we had an acre of land, a pond, a great yard that we had planted numerous plants, and trees on. We had places to sit and a fire pit in the backyard, but all this was just "stuff". Maria and I had become suffocated with the idea that we needed two vehicles, a large yard, and the material possessions we hadn't looked at in how long? Collectibles in our shed, antiques on shelves, books, DVD's, lightly used furniture and pictures loaded in steamer trunks. The few cabinets we had in the sparse storage space at Dark Nest were busting at the seams with more. The summer ended, we went to Florida to welcome in the 2021 year. The two of us had an entire summer where we literally just thought about staring at the walls, and while sitting in the Mothership in Florida, Maria brought it up, "Why don't we do this full time?"

I looked at her, and said, "Give me this spring and we're doing it!"

I wrote a bunch of fiction and while doing this, I thought out a plan, devised a process, and for the first time in my life I couldn't wait to get back to the blooming decorative pear trees that lined the front of our beloved Dark Nest as Michigan shed the final throes of winter. My overthinking would help to pave the way to the future of full time RV Travel, and make it a reality. We slowly travelled back to Dark Nest and I began the work. I started with the yard items, selling all of them on Market Place. I hired out some trim work, one of two jobs that I needed to finish to make Dark Nest sellable. I dove into the shed and sold Christmas things, Halloween scares, and random items we had no further use for. I accomplished part one and next week I'm bringing you further down the rabbit hole of consolidating, so come back...

...next Tuesday for more... I shared a lot of videos during this time period, and I'm too lazy to give you direct links, but if you have a spurt of energy and want to see the videos, check out my YouTube channel and search away: Dark Nest Travels
