Landing a Job in Unchartered Territory : Magic of the Road

Welcome to RV There Yet Tuesday, where I discuss everything, RV and Full Time RV life related, whether it's some DIY, our beginnings of the journey or just random tidbits on this wild ride. This category is everything RV related. I hope I've helped you join the fold of the RV life, or have inspired you to chase your dreams. Please read on, and leave comments below if you have some additional experiences to share we'd love to hear them...

We pulled out of Battle Row Campground on Long Island and began our westbound trek toward Michigan.

When we first started out in the Airstream, I developed a habit of talking to anyone who looked like a stationary, full-time RVer in October, whether at the laundry room or just passing by. My goal? To make a connection and get the kind of honest, real-world information that search engines just can’t provide. One woman I spoke with was a full-timer who bravely spent their winters in Michigan. They mentioned a reliable campground close to where our daughter’s wedding reception was being held, Lake Chemung.

I had already made reservations, prior to November of that year, at Lake Chemung Campground, (picture of our campsite below) and it turned out to be prepped for the season, complete with heated and insulated water lines. Although it was still early November, we were grateful to be newbies and not have to worry about freezing lines. We celebrated our daughter’s marriage, had a wonderful weekend of visiting and celebrating, and eventually said our goodbyes.

With the plan for the next leg of our journey fresh in my mind and programmed into the GPS, we were ready for the unpredictable. While I am organized when it comes to finding a job and knowing the major destination Maria and I are headed to, we travel with little-to-no plan for the stops in between. When we’re tired, we rest. If it’s a rest area or anywhere that welcomes RVers we will stop.

Sometimes I look ahead and call a campground, using an app like RV Parky or a quick Google Maps search to triangulate on a good spot. But more often than not, it's a spontaneous decision.

Over the summer, I had scoured workamper.com and landed a job in a place I’d never been, Arizona. I accepted a position at a 55+ Cal-Am resort called Val Del Oro in Mesa. The entire west and southwest regions are uncharted territory for both of us.

With this new job as our destination, I planned a trip to include stops in Roswell, to honor the alien mounted on the side of our Mothership, and then Albuquerque to sightsee and tour the Breaking Bad filming areas.

Next week, I’ll give you my take on New Mexico and our exciting journey into the desert.

Stay tuned next Tuesday for more...
