Maji-Man

Maji-Man moved to the entrance at the front of the hovel. The door hung crookedly and with one swift kick it flew inward and off its hinges. The pacing man grunted. He was scarier face to face. His ears were pointy triangles. His teeth were sharp points as he snarled in the fire’s light. The man’s head was bald, large purple, red and yellow splotches bruised every ounce of flesh. Maji-Man had never faced this kind of monstrosity. He lifted his hands and his eyes closed tightly, the primary focus was on detaining the mad man.

The power within had grown after each death he endured. He could feel the control surge through him like an electrical charge. It was visceral, real, and otherworldly. The Bruised Man was no match as he bolted forward and froze as if stopped by a wall. His arms reached and yellow stained fingernails pointed outwardly from his splayed fingertips. Maji-Man forced the man’s arms behind his back. He then focused harder until paralysis spread through the captured. Once his target was in control he took each mask from the wall and secured them in his satchel.

The return trip passed more quickly. The Bruised Man, soft and feeble, had lost his powerful force because the energy he consumed from the masks was gone. The tribe which conscripted Maji-Man would be content. He was the hunter, and the hunt was complete. The toils of his travels through the strings of time had been challenging, his mind remembering snippets of lives he’d lived. A part of him longed for nostalgia of those times, but he didn’t want to be a pawn anymore. He wanted escape. He didn’t want to return, and if this plan worked he would not face another death and could avoid that reoccurrence.

Maji-Man heard the crackling of pine as a roaring fire penetrated the early dusk. The tribe turned to the Bruised Man. They took him through the licking flames of ember and roped him to stumps. The flesh was sweet smelling and his voice shouted in agony as he writhed and danced to the flames that ate him like hungry cannibals. Darkness had taken complete control and the Maji-Man waited for an attempt to escape.
