Workamping Essentials : A Beginners Guide to Working on the Road

Updated: Sep 16

I was asked, "How do you find workamping jobs?" I'm going to explain what the f**k workamping is and essentials of how to find these jobs.  (Don't forget to hit the "buy me a coffee" cup at the top of the page, this helps support the blog and it's like leaving me a $5 dollar tip! Thanks for your patronage!)

Remember workamping requires a familiarity with these simple tools:

  • Know what information to have available to build a resume.

  • Know how to navigate a website/social media.

  • Know how to send a follow up email after submitting your qualifications/resume.

Learning how to adapt using those tools will benefit your search, but if you don't know how, do a quick web search and learn. There's always room to improve what you know.

When you're a full time RV'er, you have options. One of those options is to get work, wherever you would like to be able to sustain life on the road when travelling. Some of you reading this may be retired with double retirement incomes and some with social security payments every month. In my situation we have a nest egg, and a consistent income coming in monthly ( book royalties, minimal based on book sales, and retirement income, not enough to sustain two people), so I work, preventing the nest egg from dwindling and I can still take some time to enjoy travel.

What is workamping? For those of you unfamiliar with the term, it is the act of working for a resort, or place of business that pays for most, if not all, of your site/camp fees (the place your RV stays while working) and sometimes will pay you a wage for the job you do, and give you a site for free. Some jobs require couples, I stick with "solo" workamping gigs because Maria does not want to rejoin the workforce, respectively. These jobs come in many varieties like maintenance, retail, security/gate shack, cafeterias or restaurants, among many more, and don't always need experience, but you should apply according to your ability to learn and your capabilities.

There are several ways to find workamping jobs. Here are some groups on facebook for starters, and they're free resources on the social media giant:

Fair Warning: the groups on facebook will potentially come with drama, and admins that may and may not accept your posts, so be mindful of the guidelines when using/joining them, and you could potentially make some great contacts within your network.

The place I use, and have found ALL of my jobs is, workamping.com . This company is reputable and has been around for many, many years, I pay $47 a year (this is a bargain and no, I'm not affiliated with them, just have a membership. There are other lower cost plans as well). The service allows me to customize my resume, customize my search, and emails me all the states with job opportunities according to the filters I customize. When applying for workamping jobs, the employees usually want pictures of you and your rig. My membership helps me build a resume that workamping employers want to see, and highlights the skills offered.

I've been full time RV'ing for three years, and I've found work for summer time in the northern/western states, and winter in the southern/southwestern states for the warmth. I have made many friends, acquaintances, and have had some great jobs, and can say that not every job was a bouquet of flowers. When seeking employment, apply common sense, have some references ready, create a resume and get started. You'll be pleasantly surprised by the results. Please leave a comment below, if you have further questions that I haven't answered on the blog, and maybe you'll see your question answered in the near future. Feel free to share this article with your friends on the socials, I appreciate the traffic and the share!

Thanks for reading.
