A24's Bring Her Back, Is the Hype Worth it? Movie Review...

Welcome to WOW Wednesday Movie Pick, brought to you by Tim Eagle.

In the world of Working on Wednesday, (WOW), I give you a middle of the week movie pick, and a quick review!

Today I'm reviewing, Bring Her Back – This review is ambiguous for a reason, I try not to give too many spoilers, please use caution before proceeding. Hopefully this meets your requirements and you can add yet another movie to your ever growing list of things to watch...

This was a good movie, not a prequel to Talk to Me, but it was by the Phillippou Brothers. Bring Her Back was guttural, had cult undertones that were vague, and almost dreamlike, viewed from an old VHS tape by a foster mom/caregiver trying to bring her daughter back. The movie was almost predictable, but had some very unique and extreme horror elements: a sharp knife inside the mouth of a character, death scenes and elements surrounding them were bloody, and the innocence that came with the two foster children who had recently lost their father was a nice combination to add to the theme. Combine the trauma that all the characters have, and you get a melting pot of goodness and a plot that moves along nicely. This is an A24 film, so expect it to have that familiar gritty edge as well as a few shocking moments for good measure. Add a twist during an end scene, which is not merely a twist but a survival mechanism performed by one of the main characters, and you have a movie that could be watched for years to come. Scratching your head about “during an end scene?” Well I guess you better get watching…
