Enter a weird world of John and Suze Branch. The couple is barely getting by as Suze is an enabler to her husband John's addictive personality. Suze is worn out, but devoted. Deep inside Suze questions the validity, the nature of her marriage as she coasts in and out of John's newest medical condition, and tries to hang on to a job by a sliver of hope and a prayer. Wojciechowski uses illness as a metaphor for the world's failings, but the true heart of the story is the narrative style. By alternating between the first-person voices of John and Suze, the author captures a parasitic relationship with a masterful elegance. Wojciechowski's writing style is dark, but continues to deliver a punch in the throat and forces the reader to scream, "What THE FUCK?" Sick is, let me just say, SICK at times, a cancerous disease of addiction that eats a relationship. As the rug or truth is lifted and the dirt is exposed, this tale tantalizes enough to take a deeper look inside at what makes this dysfunction so intriguing. This is a must read, a unique take on relationships, disease, addiction, and well, not relationship advice that one usually gets from parents.
