On the Road to RV Freedom : A Farewell to Dark Nest

Welcome to RV There Yet Tuesday, where I discuss everything, RV and Full Time RV life related, whether it's some DIY, our beginnings of the journey or just random tidbits on this wild ride. This category is everything RV related. I hope I've helped you join the fold of the RV life, or have inspired you to chase your dreams. Please read on, and leave comments below if you have some additional experiences to share we'd love to hear them...

Our plan was to sell and close on Dark Nest, drive to Florida, find our new to us RV that we wanted to live in, sell the Airstream, and then begin the journey of full time life...On the Road to RV Freedom and our Farewell to Dark Nest

After talking to neighbors we selected a realtor that was best suited to list Dark Nest. She visited us, took pictures, and thanked us for an easy job. Maria and I had worked hard, clearing, condensing, and making sure that EVERYTHING was gone. The items we didn't sell or pass along, we donated to a couple different local charities. We didn't want the hassle of renting a storage unit to come back to, we wanted a clean committed break to the minimalist RV lifestyle we were jumping into. We basically had all the furniture left, all these items were allotted to family members who wanted them once we landed a buyer and had a closing date set.

Maria and I watched from the windows of the Airstream, as a few of the niche market of buyers rolled through the backyard. Dark Nest was an old one room school, so the market was a little scant. Although the housing market was elevated and we had listed it for a price that was quite higher than we thought it was worth, we still waited and wished for the right person to come along.

With time on my hands I re-organized the things that we decided to keep in the Airstream. There was a group of antique candy molds that Maria wanted, and I had a slew of papers, written stories, old letters, and the like from the nineties onward, that I had to store in a fire proof container. I also narrowed down the search of potential motorhomes, a future Mothership, that were options for when we got to Florida.

The right buyer happened. We jumped through some unnecessary hoops, humans and their errant ways, albeit feeling the fires lap at our anxiousness. Finally the closing date was set: September 22, 2021. It was going to be a busy fall. On the 21st of September was our 25th wedding anniversary, and I would be releasing my novella Krae. To say there was a lot going on, was an understatement.

As the summer rolled on, we watched a different part of what we knew as Dark Nest. We saw the backyard for the first time, a place that was cut, manicured, and very rarely lived in was a habitat that enamored us. We saw a family of deer, some hawk activity and for the first time ever we watched a Killdeer fledgling. It was quite the summer in the backyard, and we were content in the small Airstream motorhome. I made some reservations in Port Huron, at a campground, so that we could get our address change, for our domicile, get some tech upgrades that were much needed, and further the journey of purchasing the future Mothership.

Two days prior to closing we moved to the campground, finally leaving the echoing halls of Dark Nest. With a lump in my throat and our hearts aching with all the memories we had created, we pulled away for the final time with our Mothership, waving good-bye to the old place and fighting tears as we drove down the gravel road, eastward, away from the building we considered home. There were many summers and holidays spent with family, many who loved it there, and many who have died and left us over the years. We did one of the many hard things things in life, and had some hurdles to cross after closing the sale, some of which we didn't see coming, but that is part of the journey...

We're closing on our own "Dark Nest" 10/20. Our camper is being delivered 10/5 so we have time to move the necessities into it. I've lived in this house for 8 years, my husband the past 3. He is going to miss the happy family memories we formed with my deceased (ex) FIL here, I'm going to celebrate leaving the shadows of my previous life that haunt every single room. Two people can have 2 completely different perceptions of the same space. To him, it's leaving security, to me it's leaving years of oppression. But I know our future is going to be a happy one, a new adventure, with new memories to form together. Onward and upward.
