Today, I'm bringing you something completely different. If you're anything like me, your watchlist is an ever-growing weed that can't be caught up on so you can pluck the movie off your list. I'm talking about those movies that are waiting patiently for a purchase, or by some chance the movie Gods make them available on the few streaming services I subscribe to. If the new release movies feature some of my favorite actors I will not hesitate to throw my money at the film and own it to stream now and forever. Below I give you your next watchlist addiction...A24 Horror, Julia Garner and More. I hope this helps with your new selection, or gives some insight on a genre you never considered before, either way, enjoy and thanks for the read! If you love these recommendations, and add them to your list you might want to check out Nostalgia and Nightmares, Tim Eagle's Cult Classics and Hidden Gems or my Weekly Dose of Movie Magic
I recently read an article on Bring Her Back , a new A24 (my personal favorite) horror film. I'm excited to see it based on the premise: a brother and sister witness a bizarre ritual at their foster home. I love the Phillippou brother's Talk to Me, and no, despite some myths, this movie is not a sequel. Bring Her Back had my attention at "bizarre ritual". Since I'm a writer, and have written about a ritual called a Stencil Ceremony, I'm all in when it comes to movies based on this topic, throw in the fact that it is an A24 movie, I'm sold... I can't wait to buy and stream...
The second movie on my list is Weapons. I'm a fan of Julia Garner, known for her roles in Ozark and starring in my most recent streaming purchase, Wolfman, which packed an original punch and gave me a treat even if it has been an overdone trope. She starred in a 2012-ish movie Electrick Children and thrilled me in that drama. She always gives an A+ performance and I'll always support anything she's in. I can't wait to purchase Weapons and see how Garner delivers in this newest release.
Ash features another one of my favorites, Aaron Paul, who everyone mostly knows from the best television show filmed in my lifetime, okay, one of the best, Breaking Bad. His acting, alongside Bryan Cranston, even nudged me to travel to Albuquerque just to see where some of the filming locations were. Ash, from what I've read, gives a liminal type space horror. A small movie blurb is: Rya, Eiza Gonzalez (Dusk till Dawn : Television series) wakes on a planet called Ash and her crew has been murdered. This alone is nudging me to buy it. Anything I've seen Paul or Gonzalez in has been worth my time.
Now to a movie I recently watched that I think you'll enjoy...and the movie is: Companion. There was some hype around this film and I was super impressed that it lived up to the popularity. The blurb does give some of the plot away, but the twists and turns that this movie indulges in is a refreshing take on AI and some of the humanoid forms it may bring in the future, think M3gan, but better. I was impressed by the entire film, Sophie Thatcher, Heretic and Yellow Jackets, did an outstanding job and put herself on my map to watch anything in her future acting roles. This film, although some think is trite and maybe even predictable, was a refreshing take on a trope that is making its way back onto the screen and television. I've always loved the concept and think that The Twilight Zone mixed with the current state of affairs with AI have inspired the genre and that AI centered movies will continue to grow. I hope that it doesn't turn into another overdone, shitty drivel-ridden topic that so many genres have become.
