RV Life's Kinks & Quirks : Hitting The Unfiltered Road

Welcome to RV There Yet Tuesday, where I discuss everything, RV and Full Time RV life related, whether it's some DIY, our beginnings of the journey or just random tidbits on this wild ride. This category is everything RV related. I hope I've helped you join the fold of the RV life, or have inspired you to chase your dreams. Please read on, and leave comments below if you have some additional experiences to share we'd love to hear them...

This is where the fun of planning comes in handy. We had a lot to plan, a wedding to attend, a work camp gig, and logistics...we became Full Timers and were exposed to RV Life's Kinks & Quirks hitting the Unfiltered Road...

I spent the winter searching for a workamping gig, and found a place in Pennsylvania. Our middle daughter was getting married in the fall of 2022, so I wanted a state semi-close to NYC where the wedding was taking place. I explain what workamping is here: Workamping Essentials for those of you that want to read about it.

Michigan is our domicile, this is the state that we technically "live" and get mail, medicine, see doctors and vote. I explain the entire Domicile and how we did this when taking the full time life here: Real Talk about Mail and Domicile We spent four weeks in Michigan. A few weeks at a resort called Outdoor Adventures, my dad has a membership there that allows us three weeks on, and one off for a small fee, whenever I can get free or close to free camping, I take it. In between that three weeks we spent about a week boondocking at Michigan rest areas, which allow overnight parking, and then a state park on the west coast near Lake Michigan. Every year we plan a trip to Michigan for yearly doctor's appointments, visit with family, friends, grandchildren and get things in order. Afterward we departed toward Pennsylvania.

How can I describe Pennsylvania the best? I love the mountains, the rolling hills, the beautiful bluish-gray brooks along the highways and tolls. But jumping off that main interstate can lead to narrow roads, not RV suitable, and short tunnels. I mean tunnels that I could touch if I stood on my toes! PA was a state that if Michigan and Kentucky had a child, voila, Pennsylvania would have been born.

Maria and I needed to get to the Shartlesville/Bernville area, just west of Hamburg. Before arriving we took a mini-vacay and stopped near Pittsburgh at a campground called Mountain Top Campground if it had not been for the trucker's GPS and we missed the turn into the campground I would have ran into one of those low clearance tunnels that I mention. Being a fan of horror I wanted to see a well known cemetery where Night of the Living Dead was filmed. I was shocked at how small the space was where the classic film by George Romero took place. This was before spring had sprung and just as we were about to leave, a chilly wind and snowfall fell, was this a foreshadow for the workamping gig to come? We left and got a coffee at a local coffee shop to warm up and enjoy the rest of the day. We enjoyed the short stop and all the sites before heading to our final destination for the spring/summer/autumn season. This first gig I had lined up would prove to be an experience better left for the professionals, and I did it, so I was able to put the notch in my workamping belt.

Workamping would turn out to be a slight nightmare at PA Dutch Campground, and next week, I'm giving you the truth...better left to discuss YEARS later, LOL!

Stay tuned next Tuesday for more...
